What is the Point?

Having just completed a Degree In Graphic Design, I find myself, not ; thinking where am I going to work. I hope my portfolio Impresses. But more the question. What is the point? As with thousands of other graduating students I am entering a world of conformity, rules, regulations, grids and structure.

Its not these grids and structures and the rules around them that scare but more the conformity that has been taught with them. Obviously different minds think differently, But generally graphic design students are now to taught to think the same, design the same, solve the same, and use programmes all exactly the same.

Sure I can work within a grid structure, set up baseline grids, design subtle details that go unnoticed to the untrained eye, I can type-set whole documents happily, I can work endless new layouts, control typographic hierarchy through a book. I understand print, the limits, the processes, book structure, typographic history and the traditional rules it has brought forward. But that doesn’t mean I want to design the same as every other budding Grafik deseyenerr out there. I don’t want my work to go unnoticed. To sit comfortably without offending, nor particularly leaving any kind of mark of remembrance in the head of the people who’s just looked at my work.

SHOCK and SMILE. It’s about getting the balance. But will there ever be the market for it in this country? When over exposed to beauty, different becomes ugly. And ugly is everywhere.

I question more and more the notion of Graphic Design as I think more an more about this issue. Is it really a creative output. Obviously yes for some people it can be, but can you be truly original, truly creative, without being completely side lined.

Today my tutor told me that he didn’t get my design concepts, this may be due to his lack of input and knowledge of my projects. But it is a scary thing to hear, although he was quick to praise it. I get the sense that this new naive approach to my tools did’t sit too well with him, as he hasn’t really be exposed to this honest and fresh approach of graphic design yet.

Publishing Papers

To run alongside Noisulli, and to ensure that some things get published. Noisulli will be re-releasing/publishing papers, that have opened the field, explained the subject and come from the thinkers and the writers behind this movement.

No.1 will be R.L.Gregory’s Paper on the Caf´e wall illusion. It was one of the first ever naturally occuring illusions to be discovered and brought the idea’s of visual deception to the tables for scientists to play with.

Each publication will differ from the last. Influenced by the words they hold. And the specific subject heading they are talking about. Cafe wall already has a few subtle typographic highlights that nod toward the ideas that are being talked about within the paper.

With the content master page made for the book all thats left to do now is finish off the written content. Pull out some more thesis work and it’ll be nearly ready to drop in. In the process of sourcing all my images and working out a colour system for the content changes. All visual progress with Noisulli can be found over at my tumblr.
